Entering this sharks habitat feels as though you are entering a prehistoric era; these ancient looking sharks roam lazily across the ocean floor amongst the vast pillars of kelp while the murky green water envelops you in an aura of other worldliness. Despite their lethargic demeanor, they are opportunistic predators with the charismatic and agile fur seals surprisingly forming a large part of their diet.
Unique as the only shark with seven gill slits, hence their name, they are naturally curious and it was a pleasure to be able to photograph such a stunning shark which has changed little since Jurassic times without the need for the arguably disruptive practices of chumming or baiting.
